My belief is that it's the 'Times' (not Times New Roman, which works fine) font that is doing this, although I'm not certain. This font isn't actually installed so I think the problem is during some kind of font translation process. Users with Office 2010 don't have this problem, and if I up-convert the document to.docx then 2016 users can open it just fine.
