In the past, a good editor could simply load up any new NLE and kinda 'figure it out' for themselves because they all fundamentally worked the same. In some ways, X is very different. It will make you THINK you're kinda able to edit with it like you're used to - but will seem like a bunch of stuff just isn't working right.

For that reason, it's REALLY helpful to use some of the training out there to get a conceptual handle on how X operates - before you just start kicking the tires. Honestly, spend a few weeks on the web just WATCHING how X editors edit - before you dive in. A great place to start is to watch some of Thomas Grove Carter's demos to get a sense of what's possible with X. Then you can see where the new learning process is headed. FCPX professional use has been growing a lot in the last few years.

FCP7, on the other hand, has declined considerably and as a hiring manager, I don't hear from anyone who's still using it these days. But as for FCPX, it's really a phenomenal NLE.

The company I work at uses a mix of FCPX and Premiere (with occasional Avid for contractors who prefer it) but FCPX is really the preferred NLE for our documentaries and live features because of its speed, ease of use, and database capabilities. We're going to be rolling it out more globally soon but probably about a dozen full time staff editors use it in our LA facility. Been editing for over ten years now. A large chunk of that was 7, but I tought myself to edit on premiere which was awful at the time (around 2002). The background is importsnt because it show's I've always been multisystem, and not just an Apple zealot. That said, FCPX is really good, and I prefer it for straight edits. It's probably faster than any of the other NLEs for laying out an edit from zero.

Faster at moving stuff around too. But heavy multimedia projects with lots of motion graphics, the dynamic link in Premiere to AE means I use Premiere just as much. Just depends on the project. I find FCPX to generally just be better and more efficient in every way, especially with the introduction of audio lanes. Keywords are a far faster way to organize footage than bins. Magnetic timeline, while frustrating as shit at first, is an absolute massive time saver once you get the hang of it.
