Hello, I have MacBook Air with MAC OS X 10.8.1 and 250gb hdd. Recently I installed bootcamp and windows 7 and partitioned the hard drive with 125gb space for each OS. Then I decided i do not need so much space in windows so i shrinked windows partition with 50GB. Now i want to add this 50GB unallocated space back to MAC OS X partition, but I am unable to.
In MAC os x when in about this MAC storage section it shows that i have macintosh partition with 125gb space and bootcamp partition with its new 67gb space, but unallocated 50gb space is not shown at all. In disk utility only 2 partitions are show as well, Macintosh and BootCamp. But when I check bootcamp partition properties it shows that capacity is still 125GB, available 35gb and used 32gb. How can I tell the MAC OS to update info about bootcamp partition and how to extend macintosh partition with 50gb unallocated space? Camptune and iPartition allow you to adjust the size of partitions If you're comfortable with more command line tools the FREE GParted Live can be used - When you split the HD in half between OSX and Bootcamp. And then reduced the Bootcamp Partition. The bit you freed up CANNOT be easily added to the OSX Partition as the space is at the end of the Bootcamp Partition.
Imagine that the HD space is a long line. The core data is stored at the START of the partition so it is quite tricky to remove space from a secondary partition and add back to first. In effect you need to move ALL the data on the 2nd partition forward into a smaller space and then grab the freed space back into the 1st partition. Sounds like you resized the Windows partition from within windows.
When you originally created the 125GB Bootcamp partition, that was done from the Mac OS using bootcamp assistant, and that defined the actual partition size. Disk utility would not allow you to reclaim the unallocated space. I checked to see if Disk Utility would allow you to resize the bootcamp partition, but unfortunately it does not. You would have to backup your Windows Data, remove the partition from Bootcamp assistant, recreate the partition and reinstall windows from Bootcamp again with a smaller partition size.
